A 29-year-old man at Sefwi Bekwai perished after drowning in muddy water whilst attempting to save his loose goat from sinking in a river.

Kofi Jamba, a bicycle repairer, could not be saved by people in the area after a desperate search to save him few hours after the calamity struck.

The deceased’s body was eventually found the next day after the incident occurred but he had already given up the ghost.

Ironically, the loose goat was saved by people the very day that the incident happened, but it also died the next day.

An eyewitness of the gory spectacle, Awuku Addo, said Jamba returned to Sefwi Bekwai from the Northern Region last Sunday with 20 goats.

The bicycle repairer was walking with the 20 chained goats on a footbridge, crossing river Anoku around 9:00am.

Suddenly, one of the goats got loosed from the chains and jumped from the footbridge straight into the river.

Jamba, who was not prepared to lose any of his goats, then jumped into the river in an attempt to save the goat, leaving the remaining 19 goats behind.

The bicycle repairer landed on a muddy portion of the river which was covered with thick bushes and started drowning afterwards.

A man who rears pigs around the scene saw what had happened so he blew the alarm to draw people to the scene to help save the bicycle repairer.

People in the area started a wild search in the river to save Jamba, but to no avail as he had drowned already.

However, they could only save the goat that was still floating in the river. The matter was reported to the police.

Awuku Addo said a police team managed to retrieve the lifeless body of Jamba from the river the next day.

The body has since been deposited at the morgue awaiting autopsy.
