Management urged to be preventive

Accra, Sept. 3, GNA - Managements should emphasise preventive strategies that would minimise conflict between Labour and Management, a Labour Consultant said on Wednesday.

Mr Austin Gamey, Chief Executive Officer of Gamey and Gamey Academy of Mediation, said this is because waiting for unrest to take place before taking action would be expensive and constraining.

He was speaking at the start of a two-day seminar on the new Labour Law for staff of the Air Traffic Controllers of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) in Accra.

He said in the absence of preventive management systems, the organisation would have a heavy load of burden. Mr Gamey expressed the hope that the seminar would contribute to the growth of the aviation industry in Africa as well as the entire global community.

Captain Joe Boachie, Director-General of the GCAA, who gave highlights on the new Labour Law, noted that it was a major shift in the labour management negotiation system as well as labour management collective agreement administration.

He said the new development calls for the adoption of a new work system, which comprises interest based bargaining management mediation, self-mediation and problem solving techniques including voluntary and compulsory arbitration in exceptional circumstances.

Capt. Boachie expressed the hope that the seminar would retool both Labour and Management with sufficient skills and understanding to meet the challenges posed by Labour thereby promoting good corporate governance and improving industrial relations.
