Kumasi, March 6, GNA - The Manhyia Hospital in the Kumasi metropolis has for the past eight months been spending 180,000 cedis daily to buy water for use at the hospital since water stopped flowing to the facility.

Dr George Aubynn, Medical Superintendent, who disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency on Saturday said personnel of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) and the hospital's own plumbers conducted thorough investigations to find the cause of the problem but could not trace it.

In view of the huge sum the hospital was spending daily on water he said, an alternative was being sought in the construction of a mechanised borehole, which would cost about 90 million cedis. Speaking after members of the Manhyia Youth Club of Ashanti New Town in Kumasi had undertaken a clean up exercise at the Manhyia Hospital, Dr Aubynn appealed to the government to assist in the provision of the borehole to enable the hospital to function properly. He also appealed to the government to complete the construction of the polytechnic and other projects at the hospital to enable it to function as a fully-fledged hospital.

The over 80 members of the club swept the premises including the Out-Patients Department (OPD), consulting rooms and desilted the gutters.

The club also extended the exercise to the Manhyia Palace, the National and Ashanti Regional Houses of Chiefs, cleaned the Ashanti New Town toilet and ended up at the Saint Anne's Anglican Church.

Dr Aubynn commended the club for the effort and asked the members to help the hospital and government to educate the people on the need to embrace the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

Miss Joanna Osei-Bediako, chairperson of the club, said since its formation last year, the club had been interacting with organisations and individuals on the need to help rid the Ashanti New Town area of drug addicts and other negative behaviours and practices.

She appealed to residents to identify with the club for it to achieve its objective of making Ashanti New Town a better place to live since the area had acquired a bad image.
