Maritime and Dock workers Union elects new officers

The Maritime and Dockworkers’ Union (MDU) of the Ghana Trades Union Congress, has elected new National Officers at the 11th Quadrennial Delegates’ Conference of the union in Winneba, in the Central Region.

The conference, which was held from June 5- June to 8 June, elected seven persons for a four-year term, with Mr. Daniel Owusu- Koranteng occupying the position of a General Secretary.

The rest are: David Songotu; National Chairman, Abdul- Rahman Baidoo; First National Vice Chairman, and Mary Andaara, Second National Vice Chairman.

The rest are Robert E.K. Mensah; Deputy General Secretary, Alice Ama Essien, First National Trustee and Daniel Kofi Conney, Second National Trustee.

Mr. Owusu-Koranteng who leads the union for the next four years said his vision is to see the MDU united and strong to protect the rights of maritime employees.

He promised to place premium on gender mainstreaming to reverse male domination of the maritime industry.

“I will gear my efforts towards the strengthening of solidarity among the members of MDU for joint actions against violations of workers’ rights,” he said.

Mr. Owusu-Koranteng doubles as the Executive Director of Wassa Communities Affected by Mining, a non-governmental organization that aims at protecting the environment, natural resources and the protection of the rights of people living in mining communities.**
