Former President, Jerry John Rawlings has vouched for Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu's integrity saying everything about the latter is a personification of what the National Democratic Congress (NDC) stands for.
The party founder during a Town Hall meeting of cadres and NDC activists in Accra, criticised members of the party for taking Mr. Amidu for granted and added instead of making good use of his intellect and expertise, he was mostly greeted with nonchalance.
He mentioned that although the party was made up of honest and positive people with strong integrity, there were also a good number of dishonest people amongst them.
“The mere fact that Mr. Amidu's appointment as Special Prosecutor makes some members of the NDC and the NPP quiver show how trustworthy and concrete Mr. Amidu's reputation is”, he suggested.
“When people in NDC and NPP are equally angry about the appointment of Martin Amidu, what should it tell you? Martin should have been used by us (NDC) but no we checked him in, when he is an embodiment of what we stand for.”
Rawlings’ generous words about Mr. Amidu does not come as a surprise as the former is always heaping praises on the latter's dexterity in his line of work.
Mr. Amidu was approved Special Prosecutor by Parliament I February following a nomination by the President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on January 11, to be at the forefront of the fight against corruption in the country.
Mr. Rawlings as earlier reported, responded to Mr. Amidu's nomination with glee as he said, “The President couldn’t have made a better choice. Mr. Amidu has proven to be a fearless anti-corruption crusader whose pursuit of truth and justice has won him national admiration. I call on all Ghanaians to offer the appointee the required support and information in pursuit of what will undoubtedly be a challenging role.
