Masai Impounds Police Truck

Wed, 30 Jan 2002 Source: .

A private company, Masai Developers Limited has impounded the only available towing truck used by the Police Motor Transport and Traffic Unit (MTTU) for non-settlement of maintenance bills.

The bill of about $684 covers the cost of routine maintenance of the truck at the Masai workshop last September. Masai imported the modern towing truck (Century) three years ago on behalf of the Ghana Police Service.

Sources at the MTTU told the Ghanaian Chronicle newspaper that the seizure of the truck has seriously affected the road operations of the unit.

With all three vehicles assigned the unit for patrol activities grounded, the unit has no other means of transportation and is unable assist in towing away broken down vehicles or vehicles obstructing traffic.

Masai owned by the 'harassed' NDC business tycoon Eddie Annan impounded the vehicle when it was sent for maintenance early this year.

The two institutions- Masai and the Police Service- have met to resolve the issue and probable release of the truck on a gentleman's agreement.

Masai, which is involved in procurement, computer services and represents a host of foreign companies has lost a number of businesses since the coming into power of the New Patriotic Party.

Many government businesses were taken away from Masai because of the NDC links of its Managing Director. In one instance the Trade and Industry Minister Dr. K. K. Apraku was in Holland to persuade his principals to stop doing business with him.

Masai has since last year terminated the appointment of at 100 employees because of the reduction in its business portfolio.

The Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) earlier this week cleared Mr. Annan, described as a good friend of former Director General of the Social Security and National Trust Charles Asare, of any wrongdoing in his business dealings with the Trust.

He had being accused by JOYFM of conflict of interest, taking unnecessary advantage of his relationship with Mr. Asare and selling 10 SEAT salon cars at inflated prices.

The CHRAJ, which commended JOYFM's Komal Dumor for lodging the complaints, also recommended the prosecution of Mr. Asare and three others for causing financial loss to the state.
