The youth of Dagbon will on July 8 2004 embark on a demonstration to draw attention to the failure of the security agencies to maintain law and order, and to uphold the rule of law within Dagbon.

In a letter giving notice of their intention to embark on the demonstration, a copy of which is available to The Lens, the youth said, "several cases of gun shots, under the state of emergency have been reported to the Ghana Police Service in the Tamale Municipality, yet there has been scant attention paid to these cases. These perpetrators are walking freely because of their closeness to the political establishment."

"We consider the inaction of the Police a real threat to our personal safety and security, and a menace to the fragile peace in Dagbon. We cannot understand why these terrorists cannot be apprehended and brought to justice," the youth contend.

The youth intend to present a petition to the Regional Police commander at the end of the demonstration demanding the arrest and prosecution of these people. They also seek to protest against the selective application of the law.

A spokesman of the youth, Mohammed Aboagye told The Lens that the youth are hopeful that their demonstration would ginger officialdom into acting to ensure that the law is evenly applied to all regardless of one's political party affiliation, clan, ethnicity or social standing.
