A major industrial fire broke out earlier at the Charkieh Plastics Factory, located at Weija Junction, prompting a large-scale response from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).

Fire engines and personnel were deployed from across the Greater Accra and Central Regions to battle the blaze.

The inferno, which erupted in the early hours of Saturday, November 22, 2025, involved large quantities of plastics, making containment extremely difficult due to the highly combustible nature of the materials and the toxic smoke they produce.

Thick, black plumes of smoke containing harmful toxins such as dioxins and furans have been reported, forcing firefighting teams to rely on specialised protective gear and breathing apparatus.

GNFS officials say their immediate priority is to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby structures. The cause of the blaze remains unknown as efforts continue to extinguish it.

Authorities have assured the public that updates will be provided on the cause of the fire and the extent of the damage once the situation is under control.
