Media urged to partner the church to unite Ghanaians

Obuasi, Nov 7, GNA - A priest has appealed to the media to work in partnership with the church and politicians not only to unite Ghanaians but also help to address issues on poverty and diseases.

"The media should work with the church and politicians to address issues on poverty and other relevant matters bothering on development". The Most Reverend Dr Robert Aboagye-Mensah, the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church, said this when he interacted with journalists during the celebration of the 170th anniversary of Methodism in Ghana by the Obuasi Diocese of the church at Obuasi, stressed. He said the media were a powerful tool that could not be ignored in a nation-building process but emphasized that the media should provide the platform for a more constructive discussion on issues that would bring development to the people and the nation.

The Presiding Bishop expressed regret about the way some media practitioners put up issues that influence others to trade insult on the air and this facilitates divisions in the country. The Most Rev Dr Aboagye-Mensah said, "We should always discuss matters that will unite us as one people and one country". Referring to the anniversary, the Presiding Bishop said the "170th anniversary has brought we the members of the Methodist Church more together as a circuit, more together as a diocese and more together as a church".

Addressing hundreds of Methodist faithful at a thanksgiving service, the Most Rev Dr Aboagye-Mensah called on the church members who were still holding to their past faith to resolve to renew their faith with God.

"As we celebrate 170 years of Methodism in Ghana, we should renew our faith, we should remind ourselves that we are worshipping God who speaks", he said.

The Most Rev Dr Aboagye-Mensah prayed that the anniversary would offer blessing to the people of the diocese including chiefs. Nana Sarfo Agyemang III, Adansi-Ahensanhene, who represented the acting Adansihene, praised the Methodist Church for its contribution to the socio-spiritual development of the country.
