Medical Doctor discourages the use of condoms

Dr. Samuel Nunoo, a Medical Doctor and a Christian Evangelist at the weekend criticised youth counsellors who focus on the use of condom as part of the awareness drive against HIV-AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.

" The youth must be taught that total abstinence from sex is the most reliable way of avoiding HIV-AIDS as well as living morally upright lives to prepare them for the challenges ahead."

Dr Nunoo, Medical Officer in charge of the Jehovah Rapha Clinic at Adenta, near Accra, was speaking at an AIDS awareness lecture at the Madina based Faith Baptist Community School Complex, where the stunned students listened attentively as he told them of how sexual promiscuity could get them infected.

"Those of you using condoms because you have been told that it is the only means of preventing yourself against the incurable disease must know that the use of condom is not full-proof and a little rupture will seal your doom. At this age you must concentrate on profitable youthful pastimes and leave sexual indulgence to only married couples."

Dr Nunoo also told a similar lecture at the Apam Secondary School in the Central Region that available statistics on AIDS indicated that the youth were threatened with extinction if the campaign against the disease was not intensified.

He said since 1979 he had toured a number of schools and religious organisations to help halt the imminent danger and appealed to fellow medical practitioners and civil society to facilitate efforts by the Ministry of Health to fight against the disease.
