A principal medical herbalist, Dr Prince Osei, has identified three major risk factors associated with erectile dysfunction in men; physical conditions, psychological issues, and medication-related causes.

Speaking in an interview on UTV, monitored by GhanaWeb on April 13, 2026, Dr Osei explained that underlying health conditions, particularly chronic diseases, can significantly increase the risk.

“Physical conditions such as diabetes and hypertension can increase the risk of erectile dysfunction, especially when blood flow is affected due to conditions like atherosclerosis, where blood vessels become narrowed or blocked, as well as other muscular or nervous system issues,” he said.

He further noted that mental health plays a critical role in sexual performance, with psychological factors often contributing to the condition.

“Psychological factors such as stress, anxiety disorders, and depression can contribute to erectile dysfunction, especially when they are linked to work pressure and financial challenges,” he stated.

Dr Osei also highlighted the role of certain medications, noting that some commonly prescribed drugs may have erectile dysfunction as a side effect.

“Certain medications, including some blood pressure drugs, antidepressants, and the long-term use of allergy medications, can contribute to erectile dysfunction,” he added.

The herbalist emphasised the need for men to pay attention to both their physical and mental health, as well as the medications they use, in managing and preventing the condition.
