Medical missions to organize outreach programmes

Accra, June 23, GNA- Dorcas Medical Mission based in United State of America in collaboration with Christian Medical Resource Foundation (CMRF) would be organising a four-day free medical outreach programme for some selected communities in Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions. The Chorkor community in the Greater Accra and Sewoah in the Ashanti region are to benefit from free surgical and general illness treatment with assistance from medical personnel from the 37 Military and Komfo Anokye hospitals.

In a Prayer Breakfast and Official opening ceremony of the Dorcas Medical Mission in Accra, Bishop Dr. Sidley Mullings, founder of Dorcas Medical Mission and President of Mullings Ministries Charitable Corporation, the official sponsors of the medical outreach, said the outreach was done yearly giving treatment to the poor, needy and suffering people in various communities.

He said the Mission strived to meet the spiritual, physical, emotional, psychological, social and economic needs of individuals worldwide, regardless of their colour, race or creed. "We endeavour to feed the hungry, cloth the naked, care for the sick and speak the Word that restores and reconciles man to God. "Mullings Ministries Charitable Corporation embraces the health, well-being and dignity of individuals in the communities we serve, and we are committed to service that is respectful, caring land personalised." he added.

Bishop Mullings noted that the programme was based on charity and about 90 medical personnel were in the country and would start work on Monday.

He said surgical doctors and nurses would be based at the La General Hospital and other medical doctors in Chorkor and Sewouah. He said equipment for the commencement of treatment is expected to arrive in the country and drugs such as de-wormers, anti-malaria drugs would be purchased in the country.

The President of Dorcas Medical Mission, Mrs Lorna Mullings said as Christians it was their responsibility to extend a helping hand to the poor and needy in society.

She said the mission was following the footsteps of Dorcas in the Bible who dedicated her life to serving the under-privileged in society. She therefore called on the medical team to exhibit patience and love towards their patients and listen to their complains.

"Let us demonstrate the spirit of love and care for all, since most of them are under stress and needs someone to talk to." Lieutenant Col. Joseph Azure, Acting President of CMRF said, about 15000 people benefited from the programme in 12 communities in Accra last year and also about 120 people benefited from free medical surgery in Ada in the Greater Accra Region.

He called an all the personnel not only to protect their reputation but also protect and cure the suffering people. "Let us work diligently through peace to set people free, not only through medics but also through love."

The Deputy Minister of Health, Dr. Mrs. Gladys Ashitey, during the official opening of the mission said "the work of the missionaries should inspire us to work towards the welfare of the needy in the society.

She appealed to Ghanaian doctors and professionals in the country to volunteer and work to the service of the nation. She called on the mission to advise their patients to eat fruits, vegetables and exercise in order to stay healthy. Among those present were Ms. Theresa Tagoe, Deputy Regional Minister for Greater Accra Region and Member of Parliament for Ablekuma South and health officials. 23 June 2007
