Accra, June 21, GNA - A three-man team from Fields Health Care, a British company, is in the country to provide free eye care services to needy elderly persons in Accra.
The visit is at the invitation of the Ghana branch of Mission Dine Club, a charity organisation, in the United Kingdom, which specialises in caring for the elderly and the disabled in society.
The company, which would provide some 500 spectacles, is undertaking the services based on the assumption that the elderly and infirm may have difficulties visiting their optician or dentist.
At a ceremony in Accra on Monday to launch the programme, Dame Betty Asafu-Adjaye, founder of Mission Dine Club, called on public spirited people to do more to alleviate the sufferings of the needy.
She said the club hopes to extend its services to the West African sub region adding that the Accra programme, which includes the entire trip and treatment being provided would cost thousands of pounds. She appealed to the Minister of Health, Mr Nuamah- Donkor to provide further assistance when the team leaves.
Mr Mohan Vaithianathar, who is heading the three-member team, expressed his pride in rendering such humane services to the needy.
Miss Dorinda Bannerman-Bruce, a former Deputy Director of the Information Services Department, who chaired the function, called for more such voluntary services to better the lot of society.
