University of Ghana alumnus Juventus Duorinaah has etched his name in history as Ghana’s first hearing-impaired lawyer.

Born in Wa, in Ghana’s Upper West Region, Duorinaah’s story began at the Wa School for the Deaf, where he embarked on his academic journey.

He graduated from the Senior High Technical School for the Deaf (SHTSD) in 2007. Refusing to be limited by societal expectations, Duorinaah pursued higher education at the University of Ghana, where he earned a first-class degree in Sociology and Political Science, solidifying his academic prowess.

Duorinaah then went on to further his studies internationally, earning a Master of Laws (LLM) in Human Rights Law from Cardiff University’s School of Law and Politics in the United Kingdom.

Upon returning to Ghana, Duorinaah pursued his dream of practicing law by enrolling in the LLB program at the University of Ghana, where he graduated with second-class lower honours.

He then embarked on six years of rigorous legal training at the Ghana School of Law, after successfully passing the entrance examination.

The Ghana School of Law provided full financial support for a sign language interpreter throughout Duorinaah’s legal education, ensuring that he could focus on his studies without additional financial strain.

Duorinaah’s hard work culminated in his being called to the bar, joining over 700 new lawyers in Ghana this year.
