Professor Sanatu Alidu, an Associate Professor at the University for Development Studies and a dedicated farmer, has established herself as a leading figure in modern, climate-smart agriculture.

During the recent 2025 National Farmers Day celebrations, she emerged as the Best Female Farmer for the Northern Region.

Here is a brief profile of Professor Alidu

Sanatu Mustapha Alidu (PhD) is a Senior Lecturer and Plant Breeder at the Crop Science Department of the Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Consumer Sciences, University for Development Studies, Nyankpala, Tamale.

She was born and raised in northern Ghana. She had her primary and secondary education in Tamale, where she also completed the first phase of her tertiary education.

She holds a PhD in Plant Breeding from the West African Center for Crop Improvement at the University of Ghana, Legon; an MSc in Plant Breeding from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology; a BSc in Agricultural Technology (Agronomy option); and an HND in Agricultural Engineering with a specialization in Soil and Water.

Professor Alidu recently made headlines with the development of six new climate-smart and drought-tolerant cowpea varieties.

These varieties have received conditional release and are pending final approval from the National Seed Council. (NSC)

She is also the founder of Dinmbone Farm Gates and a member of the National Seed Trade Association of Ghana (NASTAG),

Her award is a well-deserved recognition of her contributions to Ghana’s agricultural sector.
