The New Patriotic Party (NPP), has a storied history of selecting running mates who have significantly shaped the political landscape.

Since 1994 after the fourth republic, the party has seen two of its running mates ascend to the vice presidency.

As the 2024 elections approach, the NPP's legacy continues with Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, unofficially, being the latest occupant of the role.

Meet all the NPP running mates since 1996

1996: John Agyekum Kufuor and running mate Kow Nkensen Arkaah

John Agyekum Kufuor ran for president with Kow Nkensen Arkaah in 1996. Although they did not win that election, Kufuor’s leadership laid a strong foundation for future campaigns.

2000 and 2004: John Agyekum Kufuor and Aliu Mahama

In the 2000 and 2004 elections, John Agyekum Kufuor selected Alhaji Aliu Mahama as his running mate.

Their partnership proved successful, with Kufuor serving two terms as President and Mahama as Vice President, marking the NPP's first tenure in the Fourth Republic.

2008: Nana Akufo-Addo and Mahamudu Bawumia

The 2008 election saw Nana Akufo-Addo running with now Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Despite their efforts, they were not victorious in the elections as the NDC won.

2012, 2016, and 2020: Nana Akufo-Addo and Mahamudu Bawumia

Nana Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia continued their partnership in the 2012, 2016, and 2020 elections.

Their persistence paid off in 2016 when they won, with Akufo-Addo becoming President and Bawumia serving as Vice President. They were re-elected in 2020.

2024: Mahamudu Bawumia and Matthew Opoku Prempeh

As the NPP looks toward the 2024 elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has transitioned from Vice President to the party's flagbearer.

In a recent announcement, he presented Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the current Energy Minister, as his running mate.
