Mensah Sarbah Hall ready to deal with issues of flooding this year – JCR President

Junior Common Room President of the Mensah Sarbah Hall, Derek Okai Mensah has stated that the hall is well prepared for any incidence of flooding in light of predictions of heavy rainfall this year.

The Mensah Sarbah Hall has over the years battled the issue of flooding during the rainy season, however, the JCR president, speaking on Campus Exclusive on Thursday, assured that appropriate mechanisms have been rolled out by the Physical Development and Municipal Services Directorate (PDMSD) and the hall management to avert probable challenges with the rainy season this year.

”It’s true that Mensah Sarbah Hall has been facing floods over the years. But I do not think such a situation is going to happen anytime soon. For the past two years, there have been floods but there were constructive measures to distill the gutters to prevent any flood in the future. It happened last year and PDMSD was alerted to do their work and this year you’ll realize that there have been a number of rains and nothing has happened so it is a clear sign that we are prepared for any flood,” he assured

He further stated that his outfit, though confident in the preparations made so far, will not relent in adopting more measures should the need arise.

”We can’t predict natural disasters every time and it may be that we have worked but our work may be outweighed by the rains that are coming in future but as and when it comes we know we will be able to take care of it” he stressed

Background

In late February, the Ghana Meteorological Agency warned of floods in parts of Accra and Kasoa on the onset of rains in March, 2020.

According to the Agency, areas such as Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Weija and the Graphic road will be the hardest hit owing to man-made factors including choked drains and buildings blocking waterways.

The Director-General of the Ghana Meteorological Agency, Michael Tanu urged individuals to take precautions during this period.
