THE Methodist University College, Ghana, (MUCG) has been affiliated to the University of Ghana.To this end, the first batch of students of MUCG who will complete their studies at the end of the current academic year will be awarded certificates by the University of Ghana.

The Principal of MUCG, Professor N.K. Pecku, announced this at the university's third matriculation ceremony in Accra at the weekend.In all,133 students were admitted to read programmes in Business Administration and Social Studies.

Professor Pecku expressed the hope that the affiliation will inspire both the new and continuing students to work harder.He said serious work can prevent examination malpractices and warned that the university will not tolerate those who do not want to study.

Professor Pecku said plans are far advanced to expand the Social Studies programme of the university to include guidance and counselling, psychology and sociology.

He said an information technology programme has also been developed to up-grade computer studies courses to keep students abreast of modern developments, adding that ?the university is seeking approval from the National Accreditation Board?.

Professor Pecku said the Academic Affairs Committee is also restructuring the university's first two-year programme to provide the students with an integrated knowledge base before specialisation in subsequent years.

This, according to principal, is aimed at making the students competitive on the job market.He said the university will continue to emphasise good morals in students. "We will continue to emphasise moral education as a means of developing holistic personalities who will enhance the quality of life in the country," he noted.

Professor Pecku said the staffing position of the university has also improved with the appointment of additional teaching staff. This, he said, has improved the lecturer-student ratio.Touching on residential accommodation for students, he said the university has acquired a second hostel which accommodates 80 students.

He said the university is still looking out for more suitable housing facilities for the students and announced that the Lay Movement of the Methodist Church is currently constructing a hostel on the university campus for 200 students.
