Wenchi (B/A), June 5, GNA- The Wenchi Traditional Council on Friday concluded a memorandum of understanding with the authorities of the Methodist University of Ghana handing over a 150-acre plot of land to University for its faculty of Agriculture.
Osagyefo Ampem Abrefa Mbore Bediatuo VI, the Omanhene, and Nana Dr Justice Owusu Ansah Siakwan Gyempin, 11, Akyempemhene signed the document on behalf of the Council whilst the Reverend Professor Samuel Kwesi Agyepong, Principal of the University, the Right Reverend Charles Konadu, Methodist Bishop of Wenchi and Mr. A.K. Bondzie, Registrar of the University appended their signatures.
The plot was formerly the location of an agricultural research station but which was abandoned about 30 years ago without it being put to any good use.
The buildings for the station are still standing idle and the place had been taken over by squatters.
Before the signing ceremony, which took place at the Omanhene's palace and witnessed by other chiefs and members and priests of the Methodist Church, Osagyefo Bediatuo lauded the idea of citing a University at Wenchi, hometown of Professor Kofi Abrefa Busia, Prime Minister in the Second Republic.
The Omanhene said the establishment of the institution in the town was a dream come true and commended the Methodist Church, noting its contributions to the promotion of education, health and the social well being of the people of Wenchi and its environs.
Osagyefo Bediatuo noted the excellent partnership between the Church and the Traditional authorities in development efforts and pledged the readiness of the council and the people to continue to offer the necessary support to the Church.
Rev Professor Agyepong stressed that education "is very necessary for development', saying a country could abound in rich natural resources but without an educated and skilled manpower the people would remain poor and undeveloped.
He thanked the Wenchi Traditional Council for the offer and expressed the hope that the Council would continue to assist the Church to help Wenchi regain its past glory as the centre of education in Brong Ahafo.
The Principal said the faculty would offer certificate, diploma and degree courses in Agriculture and Human Ecology to enable its graduates to enter into in agri-business for food processing and for export. Professor Agyepong announced that the Traditional Council would be offered a 10 per cent intake of qualified students and a place on the University's Board of Governors.
