MiDA inaugurates schools in Gomoa West

Gomoa Oguan, July 28, GNA - Mr. Martin Eson-Benjamin, Chief Executive Officer of the Millennium Development Authority (MiDA), has inaugurated two schools it rehabilitated at Gomoa Oguan and Beadze both in the Gomoa West District.

He said the provision of infrastructure and amenities by MiDA such as schools, potable water, electricity, markets and roads would help increase productivity, especially by farmers, targeted by the Millennium Challenge Compact.

Mr. Eson-Benjamin He said the Challenge compact sought to reduce poverty through agricultural transformation. He said MiDA had rehabilitated 35 schools in seven districts at a total cost of 2.2 million dollars. Mr. Eson-Benjamin said MiDA has planned to construct 278 schools blocks, 25 teachers' quarters, toilet and urinary facilities and 9 Information and Communication Technology centers in 30 districts through out the country under the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA), Ghana Programme.

He said MiDA has provided 216 dual desks, 11 teachers' tables, 15 teachers' chairs and 11 cupboards to enhance teaching and learning in the two schools.

Mr. Eson-Benjamin announced that the United States Agency for International Development would train some teachers under the International Foundation for Education and Self-help (IFESH) to increase the number of qualified teachers in the MiDA schools. Mr. Jim Beduar, Country Director, Millennium Challenge Cooperation, commended the MiDA for contributing to the development of education. He said "we educate our children to maximize their potentials to enable them to become good leaders and to improve their lives as well as those of their families."

He appealed to the communities to take good care of facilities provided by development partners. Mr. Theophilus Aidoo-Mensah, Gomoa West District Chief Executive, said the assembly has planned to construct 12 schools before the end of the year.

He appealed to parents to send their children to schools to enable them acquire skills and knowledge needed for national development. Mr. Aidoo-Mensah, said " Denying your child education today, implies denying him working opportunities tomorrow". Mrs. Beatrice Lokko, District Director of Education, has appealed to parents to support the Directorate to improve standards of education in the area. Mr. Francis Kojo Arthur, Member of Parliament for the area, said that education played a significant role in human development and advised the people to place premium the education of children. Nana Ama Tsetsewa, Mankrado of Oguan, appealed to the government to build a junior high school in the town.
