Military brutality: Sanction culprits – Agalga

The soldiers who allegedly brutalised a police officer in the Ashanti Region must be punished if found guilty, Ranking Member on parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, James Agalga, has said.

Two soldiers at the Uadarra Barracks at Adum, Kumasi, on the night of Monday June 5 assaulted a uniformed policeman for using a road at the barracks to the regional police command.

Class News’ Owoahene Addai Mununkum reported that the soldiers resorted to beating up the policeman after he refused to heed their warning not to use the route.

Commenting on the issue, the former Deputy Minister for the Interior told Valentina Ofori Afriyie on Class FM’s 505 on Tuesday June 6 that the “police and military are not rivals; they complement each other on security, so why would they engage in open confrontation?”

For him, the incident “must be condemned” as it does not augur well for the country’s security.

He, therefore, called on the military hierarchy in the region to ensure that punitive measures are taken against the culprits.

Meanwhile, keys to the vehicle of the car owned by the victim have been retrieved and handed over to the police.

Information from the military indicates investigations are underway, but no action has been taken against the culprits yet as they are still at post.
