Former National Security Coordinator, Lt. Col. Larry Gbevlo Lartey has revealed that his mindset about security changed for the better following a sound advice from late President John Evans Atta Mills.
The security Capo, who was one-time commander of the dreaded '64 Battalion' under former President Jerry John Rawlings, told Atinka News, the late president advised him that security was not about machismo, quarrels or mere show of bravado, but rather it is about the welfare of the people, which he described as human security .
Lt. Col. Gbevlo-Lartey was speaking to our news team at the ‘Asomdwee Park’ where a memorial service was held for the late president.
“When Professor Mills assumed office, he called me and advised me that security entails how the people in the country can be safe; it is about the well-being of the people and how they can live in peace; and also respecting the rights of people and not mere show of bravado,” the tough-talking soldier said.
He explained that the advice from the late president brought about a lot of changes in the area of the rights of people, and how to live in peace. “The former President was concerned about the welfare and the security of the people as well as how people can live in peace,” he reiterated.
He added that Prof. Mills was the originator of human security in the country; adding, the late president always wanted Ghanaians to live in dignity. Gbevlo-Lartey said this direction given by President Mills helped him to do his work well as security coordinator without encountering any serious difficulties.
