Accra, Aug. 28, GNA - The Flag-bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Professor John Evans Atta Mills has cut short his visit to the United Kingdom to join the National Democratic Congress (NDC) demonstration scheduled for Kumasi on Tuesday.

A statement signed by Mr Baba Jamal, Deputy General Secretary of NDC, said the demonstration dubbed "Kafo Didi" is being organised by the Ashanti Regional Branch of the NDC.

The statement said it would highlight the "worsening economic hardships" and their resultant hardships on Ghanaians as well as "the incompetence of the Kufuor Administration".

The statement said the demonstration would also mark the beginning of a nation-wide protest against plans by the government to increase the Value Added Tax (VAT) from 12.5 per cent to 15 per cent.

This, the statement said, would further increase the tax burden imposed on Ghanaians since the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government assumed office.

The statement said the former President and the founder of the NDC, Jerry John Rawlings was also expected in Accra from Europe at the weekend to participate in the march together with the National Chairman, Dr Obed Asamoah.

The statement said a special team from the National Headquarters was already in Kumasi to assist with the preparations towards the demonstration.

Prof. Mills is expected to proceed to Kumasi to meet with the planning committee on Saturday August 30.

The statement said Prof. Mills, who was invited by the foreign branches of the party, interacted with key political and business figures and the Ghanaian communities in the two countries.
