THE former Vice-President, Professor John Atta Mills has denied being subjected to intense pressure by his family to discontinue his ambition to contest and win the presidential slot of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

?There is no iota of truth in the story being peddled by a section of the Ghanaian media that I am under pressure by a section of my family to throw away my desire to contest the NDC presidential slot,? he said.

In a telephone interview from British Columbia, Canada, yesterday, Prof Mills said he is not aware of any pressure from his family and described the publication as a fabrication by people to dampen the spirit of his supporters in the party.

?This is a clear manifestation of people hitting below the belt ; in other words, they are not playing according to the rules of the game,? the former vice-president said.

He said,? I have no wider family and wonder where such a story originated from and for what objective it is intended to achieve?.

According to Prof Mills , it would have been better for the media to speak to him, instead of coming out with a story which is without any substance and intended to undermine his political career and send wrong signals to his supporters in the party.

?I call on my supporters in the party to disregard the spurious story being bandied about that I am reeling under pressure from so-called family relations which I am not aware of to strip me of my right to contest the presidential primaries of the NDC,? he said.

He called on such supporters to ignore such publications calculated to sow seeds of discord and confusion within the rank and file of the NDC and remain calm and unruffled since he will make his intentions on the presidential primaries public very soon.

?It is expected that while the NDC prepares to elect its presidential candidate for the year 2004 polls, strange news items will find their way on the pages of the tabloids, all calculated to knock our heads together and prevent us from achieving our goal of recapturing political power in the next elections,? Prof Mills said.
