APA-Accra (Ghana) President John Evans Atta Mills of Ghana on Wednesday joined the Ghanaian Veterans Association to mark the 64th Remembrance Day ceremony at the Osu Christianburg War Cemetery, the government seat in the capital Accra.

The annual celebrations are staged in memory of soldiers who fought in the two World Wars on behalf of their colonial master Britain – before the country attained its independence in 1957.

Some of the soldiers who participated in the war, dressed in military attire, lined up as wreaths were laid in honour of their departed colleagues.

A siren was sounded at exactly 11.00 am local time in memory of the veterans, while observing a two-minute silence during the ceremony.

Mills laid the first wreath on behalf of the people of Ghana, with British High Commissioner Nicholas Wescott laying one on behalf of the Commonwealth Soldiers, and Air Vice Marshal Odartey Banner laid another on behalf of the Veterans as the Ghana Armed Forces Band graced the occasion with solemn music.

Every November 11 is observed as Veterans Day across countries that participated in the two World Wars.
