Accra, June 1, GNA - Prof. John Atta Mills, presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), on Friday expressed sorrow at the death of Madam Fathia Nkrumah, wife of the late President Kwame Nkrumah.
"I have heard with a deep sense of sorrow, the passing of Madam Fathia Nkrumah in a Cairo Hospital yesterday (Thursday)," he said in statement issued in Accra on Friday.
"It is rather sad that in the year we are marking 50 years of nationhood which the great Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah bequeathed to us, we should be mourning the death of the woman who undoubtedly stood stoically by the side of her husband as the agenda of the forward march of the country was being pursued," Prof. Atta Mills said.
He prayed to God to fill her family with inner strength to carry on and asked her children to take consolation in the fact that their late mother has a permanent place in the history of Ghana and also has her memory firmly etched on the people's minds. Madam Fathia, 75, suffered a stroke a few months ago and was on admission at a Cairo Hospital. She will be buried in Cairo on Friday. 01 June 07
NSOC 25 Social Foundation Presentation NGO supports schools in Assin North District
Assin Brofoyedur (C/R), June 1, GNA - Foundationfor Deprived Children in Ghana (FDCG), a Non-profit Charitable Organization, on Friday presented stationery items worth 5,000 dollars to Assin Brofoyedur D/A Primary and Junior Secondary Schools in the Assin North District of the Central Region. The presentation formed part of a periodic gesture by the organization to promote education and prospects of children of school-going age in the various deprived and under-resourced rural and urban public schools and communities in Ghana. Nana Yaw Forster Gish, Executive Director of FDCG, addressing the pupils said education was the basic commodity of mankind and urged them to partner with their books and stay away from drugs and other social vices which may endanger their lives.
Mrs Delinda Baffour Yaw Fosuhene, Projects Coordinator, on his part said education was one of the vital instruments for poverty reduction, adding that his organization was committed to reducing poverty and illiteracy among children of the area.
Mr Bernard Mensah, a teacher of one the schools Who received the items, expressed his gratitude to the executive body of the FDCG for their continuous support for the school over the years. The items donated included pens, pencils, erasers, exercise and notebooks, writing pads, drawing sheets and mathematical sets.
