Mills was a rare African politician – Asiedu Nketia

General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) Johnson Asiedu Nketia has praised the style of politics of the late Professor John Evans Atta Mills, describing it as very rare on the African continent.

He said the late president took delight in the rise of his subordinates, a trait many politicians on the African continent are bereft of.

Speaking to TV3’s Kweku Temeng on the sidelines of the Special Wreath-Laying Ceremony held on Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at the Asomdwee Park, the former Member of Parliament (MP) for Wenchi West Constituency said: “I remember [Prof. Atta Mills] as a leader who takes delight when his followers are evolving and rising.”

Upon the assumption of the presidency in 2009, President Mills’ ministerial appointees were largely relatively young to the extent that they were described as Team B.

But Mr Asiedu Nketia insists the late president’s sense of fairness in nominating young blood is another trait that is closely linked to the former law lecturer.

“He always wanted the laws to apply equally to him as to everybody,” Mr Asiedu Nketia revealed.

He said he knew Prof. Mills as far back as 1982 at the University of Ghana’s School of Administration, where he was a student, and the late president was lecturer.

He recounts that they met on several occasions then. Their relationship was rekindled when the two found themselves in the same political party - NDC.

The late President Mills won the 2008 elections as a leader of the NDC with Mr Asiedu Nketia as General Secretary.
