Minister calls on NCCE to highlight environmental problems

Accra, June 8, GNA - Mr Kwadwo Adjei Darko, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, on Tuesday called on the National Commission for Civic Education, (NCCE) to highlight environmental issues instead of dwelling on the Constitution and politics.

He said in undertaking the task, the NCCE should team up with the District Assemblies to make life meaningful for Ghanaians.

In a statement signed Mr Frank Asante, Public Relations Officer of the Ministry, the Minister said NCCE could work in concert with the Assemblies on issues like the campaign for greater discipline embarked upon by Vice President Alui Mahama and educate Ghanaians to pay their taxes, especially property rates.

Mr Adjei Darko made these remarks when officials of the Commission led a two-man delegation from the Gambia National Council for Civic Education to pay a courtesy call on him.

He said the Commission should team up with the sub-district structures of the assemblies to educate the public on the need to keep clean environment and maintain personal hygiene.

The Minister, therefore, urged the NCCE to submit its proposals to the Ministry to enable the two organizations draw up plans to educate Ghanaians on the myriad of issues affecting good governance at the local level.

The two Gambians, Mr Duada Jallow and Mr Edward Gomez, who were in the country to study the Local Government System and the Decentralization Process briefed the Minister on Gambia's Local Government and decentralization efforts, which was started last year.
