Minister commissions 100 million cedi girls' dormitory

Mabang (Ash), Dec. 20, GNA - Mr Sampson Kwaku Boafo, Ashanti Regional Minister, on Monday commissioned a 100 million-cedi girls' dormitory block at the Mabang Secondary/Technical School in the Ahafo-Ano North District.

The block, capable of accommodating 160 students, was built from part of the MPs Common Fund.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Regional Minister praised the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ahafo-Ano North, Mr Kwame Owusu Frimpong, for his interest in girls' education, which spurred him on to undertake the project to increase the intake of female students to the boarding house from 80 to 160.

Mr Boafo also praised the teaching staff and the students for their excellent academic achievement in this year's Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE) results of which 97 students out of the 104 candidates qualified for admission into tertiary institutions, without any failure.

Mr Emmanuel Koomson, headmaster of the school enumerated a number of problems facing the school which included the lack of a school bus, safe drinking water, toilet and urinal facilities, science and computer laboratories as well as staff and students' accommodation and appealed to the Ministry of Education and Sports, the District Assembly and the Ashanti Regional Co-ordinating Council for assistance. Mrs Naana Abudu, the District Director of Education, appealed to the staff and the students to demonstrate a high level of commitment and dedication to duty and co-operate to ensure greater discipline in the school.

Mr Owusu Frimpong said 20 students in the District were on scholarship from his share of the common fund and appealed to parents to support their wards to attain higher educational levels. Nana Darko Montwi II, Omanhene of Mabang, who chaired the function, praised the MP for the development of education in the area.
