Accra, June 29, GNA - National Security has began investigations into an alleged assassination attempt on Dr Benjamin Kunbuor, Minister of Health at a spot near Labone Senior High School on Monday night.
A source close to the Minister told Ghana News Agency on Tuesday, that Dr Kunbuor escaped death around midnight when a missile suspected to be a bullet ripped through the front passenger seat of his four-wheel drive vehicle.
"The Minister who was driving home escaped unhurt but was visibly shaken by the incident," it said.
The source said immediately Dr Kunbuor passed by the school, he heard a bang on the windscreen but thought it was a stone or a falling object that compelled him to veer off the road to assess the situation when he realised an opening on the windscreen.
It said the minister who had no option but to drive home, later reported the incident to the police and National Security which had begun investigations.
During the incident the Minister's police bodyguard had closed and left for home.
The source said Dr Kunbuor was contemplating reviewing his entire security set up since he felt threatened by the incident which could have claimed his life.
Experts and eyewitnesses account said the damage on the vehicle could have been caused by a bullet and might still be lodged in the vehicle or made a clean pass through the windscreen, escaping through an open window. However, it could not be immediately ascertained if the missile was shot by an assailant attempting to kill him or it was a stray bullet shot by an armed robber or someone attempting to scare off robbers. But the trajectory of the missile gave strong indications that it might have been an assassination attempt as it was shot directly at the front of the moving vehicle.
Dr Kunbuor who participated in the inauguration of four projects at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra on Tuesday, confirmed to journalists the assassination attempt on his life but declined to give details because the issue is under investigations.
The projects were a Reproductive Health Centre; Tower Block of the Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Burns Centre; Cell Biology Laboratory and Rehabilitated Medical Block.
