Ministers calls for discipline among students

Mrs Elizabeth Amoah-Tetteh, Deputy Minister for Pre-Tertiary Education on Friday called on students to be disciplined and devote their time to their books and avoid social vices which might affect their goals in education.

Mrs Amoah-Tetteh said education was key to national development; therefore there was the need for students to obey rules and regulations to succeed in their endeavours.

She said this at the graduation ceremony of the 5th edition of the Ghana National Exchange Programme School (GNEPS) in Accra on the theme: “Promoting unity in diversity for intellectual capacity and peace building: The foundation for national development.”

The Minister said the programme has been designed to serve as a centre for promoting cross cultural diversity, intellectual advancement, sharing of skills, harnessing of ideas and gaining of new experiences.

She said the programme, attracted 35 senior high schools in seven regions as participants, aimed at inculcating the spirit of unity among students.

Mrs Amoah-Tetteh said students, pursuing courses in Business, Visual and General Arts, Agricultural Science, Integrated Science, Technical and Home Economics, would change their schools for one month.

She said the programme would promote national unity and integration and eradicate ethnicity among students and enhance development.

Mrs Amoah-Tetteh urged the students to share their experiences with their colleagues and influence them to learn together and to be tolerant and understanding.

She commended the organisers of the programme for the opportunity given to the students to know, understand and experience the benefits of unity in diversity.

Mr Kobla Asamani, President of GNESP said the programme was instituted by the Ghana Country Award Council and would develop quality leaders to suit all geographical terrain and promote internal tourism.

Mr Asamani noted that the pursuit of sporting activities, health programmes like HIV and AIDS awareness creation had been inculcated in the programme to give a broader approach towards its management.

He said since the inception of the programme, it had promoted positive institutional values and volunteerism among students.

Mr Asamani appealed to corporate bodies to come to the aid of the programme by supporting it financially to achieve its objectives.

Certificates were awarded to deserving students who distinguished themselves in the field of academic excellence and discipline.
