The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that it is working expeditiously to ensure a smooth transition to the new chip-embedded passport system, following the official switch from biometric passports on April 28, 2025.

According to the Ministry, approximately 30,000 applications remain in the old system, with 7,900 paid applicants having incomplete applications.

In a press release dated April 30, 2025, the Ministry assured affected applicants that they will not be required to pay again to complete their pending applications.

“The Ministry notes that about 30,000 applications remain in the old system, out of which 7,900 paid applicants have incomplete applications. Applicants with incomplete applications are assured that they will not be charged again to complete the pending applications. Applicants are to visit the new portal at passport.mfa.gov.gh and follow the prompts to complete their applications,” the statement read.

The Ministry also outlined guidelines for affected applicants:

• Those who started applications under the old system must complete them within 90 days using the new portal.

• Applicants with previously booked appointments on the old system should proceed to Passport Application Centres for biometric capture.

• Those who missed appointments on April 28 and 29, 2025, are advised to visit their respective centres for further processing.

“All enquiries may be directed to the 24-hour hotline at 0302-754-200 for clarification,” the Ministry added.
