Accra, July 24, GNA - The Ministry of Transport in collaboration with its agencies on Saturday embarked on a Safety Walk to create awareness on road safety.

The walk has the fundamental purpose of sensitizing the public on precautions that would ensure safety on the roads.

Mr Kweku Sersah-Johnson, Director of Public Relations of the Ministry of Transport, told the Ghana News Agency that the walk was intended to bring all the 16 transport agencies such as the Driver and Vehicle License Authority, Ghana Private Road Transport Union and Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority together to encourage them fight accidents.

He said the exercise, which was being organised for the second time, was to educate the public as well as road users to be cautious in their day to day transport activities.

Mr Sersah-Johnson said the walk, although codenamed "Safety Walk," also served as a platform for body exercise and fitness, adding "individuals should sometimes walk to help gain body fitness and save money".

Mr A.A. Prempeh, Assistant Transport Planning Officer of the Ministry of Transport, said the walk would contribute to the reduction of pollution and obesity in the country.

He therefore called on the Ministry to always organize such programmes in order to educate the public on road safety.
