Subriso (Ash), May 27, GNA - The Ministry of Women and Children's Affairs has released a total of 80 million cedis to women's groups in the Ahafo-Ano North district of Ashanti. This was contained in a speech read on behalf of Mrs Gladys Asmah, the sector Minister at the inauguration of the Subriso Plantain Growers Association near Tepa.

Mrs Asmah said the money to the various women's groups was part of efforts being made to reduce poverty especially among women. She asked the women to form co-operatives so as to benefit from assistance from financial institutions to enable them expand their farms.

Mrs Asmah told the women to invest more in the education of their children with the money they realise from their businesses, since education was the key to development.

She appealed to the women not to allow themselves to be deceived by politicians of the other political parties since this was an election year but remain focused and vote massively for the NPP for it to retain power to continue to support them.

Mr Kwarko Kyei, the Ahafo-Ano North District Director of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, asked the women to seek technical advice and adopt new farming methods on their farms for increased yields.

Mrs Patience Osei Abora, chairperson of the association, said it was formed to unite all women plantain farmers to get easy assistance so they can produce more food.

She made a passionate appeal for the Ministry of Women and Children's Affairs to assist the 41-member association financially to enable them expand their farms. 27 May 04
