Minority in Parliament has called for a full and independent investigation into a missile strike on a United Nations peacekeeping base in southern Lebanon that left two Ghanaian soldiers critically injured.

According to Samuel Abu Jinapor, the Ranking Member of the Foreign Affairs Committee in Parliament, the incident, which occurred at a base of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), warrants an independence probe.

The call was made during an engagement between Members of Parliament’s Committees on Foreign Affairs and Defence and Intelligence and the Israeli Ambassador to Ghana, Roey Gilad, on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, where discussions focused on the ongoing unrest in the Middle East.

Jinapor said that during the meeting, they expressed grave concern over the attack and stressed that assaults on United Nations peacekeepers violate established principles of international humanitarian law.

They noted that such actions could amount to a war crime.

“The Minority therefore called for a full and comprehensive investigation into the incident to establish the facts and ensure that those responsible are identified and held accountable,” a statement by the lawmaker on March 12, 2026, stated.

He also indicated that the Minority has urged that stronger security arrangements be put in place around peacekeeping operations in Lebanon to guarantee the safety of all personnel serving under United Nations mandates.

“It is equally important that stronger security arrangements are put in place around peacekeeping operations in Lebanon to guarantee the safety of all peacekeepers,” the statement added.

The caucus emphasised that Ghanaian soldiers deployed on UN peacekeeping missions have earned global respect for their discipline and commitment to maintaining peace and protecting civilian populations in conflict zones.

The lawmakers also highlighted the sacrifices made by Ghanaian peacekeepers and their families, stressing that every soldier serving abroad has loved ones back home who depend on them and hope for their safe return.
