The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin's decision to adjourn Parliament sine die has received mixed reactions from segments of the Ghanaian public.

Expressing their views on the latest development in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb, some Ghanaians lamented how the suspension could affect the order of business and the passage of pending laws requiring parliamentary approval.

One individual noted that the current standoff between the two factions and the adjournment will significantly impact the incumbent government’s ability to conduct business, particularly in the passage of certain laws that may be essential for the government to implement.

“I believe that the current situation at Parliament will really have effects on the business of the incumbent leadership. In Parliament, you have to pass laws and go about government business and so adjournment will inhibit the progress and the business aspect as well,” he said.

Another Ghanaian expressed an indifferent view, stating that the suspension will not affect anything, as the lawmakers, according to him, do not fulfill their responsibilities as assigned to them.

“I think this suspension is useless because the lawmakers do not do anything on a normal day so they suspending the Parliament will not change nor affect the business order,” he said.

On the positive side of the suspension, some said that it may help the two factions in the House resolve their conflicts and realign themselves.

“It is okay and it will prevent the conflict that was trying to happen. He suspending it was the right way to go so that he won’t be accused of being biased,” one other person said.

Meanwhile, the leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament (MPs), Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has announced that his side of the House will trigger a recall of Parliament on Wednesday, October 23, 2024.
