Agona Swedru, July 7, GNA - The Agona Swedru Police have arrested Charles Arthur (alias Joe), a 44-year-old Area Manager of the Kuapa Cocoa Company, for allegedly inciting people to attack and kill a 32-year-old weighing scale mechanic of the same company. The deceased, Kwesi Kyere, stationed at Akim Oda in the Eastern Region, was said to have gone to the suspect to borrow 1.3 million cedis to purchase cocoa during the last season.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) B B Bakomora, Agona Swedru District Commander of Police, speaking to the Ghana News Agency, said the suspect who was on-board a vehicle from Accra to Swedru spotted the deceased walking along the Swedru-Ekwamkrom road.

He said Arthur got down from the vehicle and raised an alarm that the deceased was a thief attracting some fitters, who chased him with sticks, cutlasses and other offensive weapons. DSP Bakomora said the late Kyere took to his heels but was apprehended by his pursuers, who started manhandling him in a nearby bush until a Good Samaritan intervened and took him to the Police Station at Agona Swedru.

The District Commander stated that while the Police were taking his statement, Kyere collapsed and died on the way to the Swedru Government Hospital.

He said the Police quickly arrested the suspect and placed him in custody and rounded up 13 fitters involved in the mob attack. Mr Bakomora said Arthur and the 13 other suspects would be arraigned before Agona Swedru Circuit Court when investigations were completed, adding that, the body had been deposited at the Winneba Government Hospital mortuary for autopsy.
