More Oil Discovered

Kosmos Energy’s Banda-1 Exploration Well Discovers Oil Offshore Ghana Kosmos Energy has another discovery in the West Cape Three Points license offshore Ghana.

The Banda-1 well, drilled by the semisubmersible Atwood Hunter, encountered the oil in Cenomanian-aged reservoirs. The location is 9.6 km (5.9 mi) southeast of the Odum discovery in the eastern part of the license.


According to partner Tullow Oil, the well intersected Cenomanian turbidites over a gross vertical interval of 300 m (984 ft), which contains more than 100 m (328 ft) of low porosity sandstone and 3 m (9.8 ft) of 40° API oil pay.


The well was drilled in a water depth of 921 m (3,022 ft) and to a TD of 4,580 m (15,026 ft). On completion, it will be suspended for potential future use.

Atwood Hunter will next complete drilling of the Makore-1 well targeting Turonian age reservoirs in the south of the license. The Eirik Raude drilled the upper section of this well in April.


Tullow Exploration Director Angus McCoss said, “Banda-1 was our first wildcat designed specifically to investigate the potential of Cenomanian age reservoirs in West Cape Three Points. Finding some light oil in such a thick sandstone package is an encouraging first step, however the reservoir is poor quality at this location.


“The well results will now be integrated into the regional geologic model to re-evaluate the remaining potential in other prospects at this stratigraphic level within our acreage.”
