More women in parliament would help the gender cause - Mrs Adu-Gyamfi

Mrs Mercy Adu-Gyamfi, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary candidate for the Akwatia Constituency, has said gender parity would be achieved if more women were voted into Parliament.

The change would also help to reduce the many challenges faced by women nationwide, she added.

Mrs Adu-Gyamfi said Parliament being the highest decision making body in the country needed more women to take decisions that would help reduce poverty and improve the prevailing situation of many families.

Ms Adu-Gyamfi, who is contesting Mr Babal Jamal, the incumbent for the Constituency, a former Deputy Eastern Regional Minister and currently Deputy Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, said is not ‘haunted by the stature of her contender’.

The candidate has called on all women irrespective of their background to vote massively for women contesting in their respective constituencies in the coming presidential and parliamentary elections.

Mrs Adu-Gyamfi, who was speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency as part of the ‘Women's Profile', an initiative of GNA to project all the women parliamentary candidates, said challenges facing women and girls across the country were critical for those in leadership positions to address.

In this regard, she said, more women were needed to be voted into the next Parliament to champion the cause because it was not enough to talk about women empowerment while they continued to be relegated to the background.

The candidate appealed to all in the Akwatia Constituency to give her the chance to prove that ‘what men can do, women can do better'.

Mrs Adu-Gyamfi, married woman with six children is also a businesswoman and a trained hairdresser.

She has held many positions in the NPP in the constituency including a Polling Station women's organiser and constituency women's organiser for the past 12 years.

The candidate contested two males including a former Member of Parliament (MP) for the Constituency, Dr Kofi Asare at the primaries to win the slot to represent the NPP and hopes to emerge victorious.
