Mampong (Ash), March 06, GNA - A small biennial plant with efficient mosquitoes repellent property has been discovered at Asante Mampong, a research report has said.
The M and J Health Management Consul at Mampong conducted the research and explained that the plant, when harvested and hung on doors or dried and burnt like coil, prevented mosquitoes from entering open doors.
Mr Jacob Amoah, a pharmacist at the Mampong District Hospital and head of the research team, told the Ghana News Agency that the experiment had been replicated in different environments and it yielded the same result.
He suggested that the plant to be used alongside impregnated bed netting to ensure an effective control of the vector and for that matter malaria infection.
Mr Amoah said no research had been conducted to determine whether apart from a repellent activity, the plant had an insecticide property. The Research Unit, he said, would further conduct a research to formulate creams and soaps to complement the functions of impregnated bed netting.
Mr Amoah said the Research Unit has plant products used to treat diabetes, diabetic wounds, and duodenal ulcer.
