Mother dies in effort to rescue son from police

Dormaa Ahenkro, May 26, GNA - The recalcitrance of Bismark Akwasi Opoku, a petrol attendant at Dormaa Ahenkro, has led to the freak death of his 45 year-old mother after a tussle.

The police have arrested three suspects including Bismark to assist in investigations into the death of Madam Alice Afua Pokuaa. Bismark was alleged to have hidden his friend, Opong Agyemang, in a bedroom to prevent his arrest by the police and in a tussle his mother collapsed and was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. An eyewitness, Madam Akua Gyanfua, told Ghana News Agency that neighbours heard hot verbal exchanges in the deceased's house and when they went they met a policeman in mufti ordering Bismarck to open the door to enable his friend, Agyeman, to be served with summons. The summons was from the Dormaa District Officer of the Department of Social Welfare over Agyemang's denial of paternity for a six-month old baby girl.

The witness said Bismarck refused to open the door and that led to brawl between him and the policeman who called for re-enforcement from the charge office while sympathizers assisted Bismarck to resist the police.

Madam Gyanfua said the struggle between the two parties attracted the deceased who rushed into the crowd in an attempt to disengage his son from the grip of the police and fell heavily on the ground. She was taken to the Dormaa Presbyterian Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
