Mother pleads for harsher jail sentence for son

Akim Swedru, July 20, GNA - There was drama at a circuit court in Akim Swedru when a 67-year-old farmer, madam Efua Amakyewa, pleaded with the court to impose a heavy jail term on her son who assaulted her and one of her children.

Madam Amakyewa explained to the court that the conduct of her son Kwaku Aboagye, an ex-convict had always been violent and threatened the life of the whole family.

Aboagye, a 35-year-old farmer at Akim Akokoaso in the Birim North District who was facing two counts of assault and threatening, pleaded guilty and the court convicted him on his own plea to six years imprisonment.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Mathias Kwabena Dotse told the court presided over by Mr Edward Kwame Bosompem Apenkwa that on June 8 at about 09.00 hours at Akim Akokoaso, the convict returned from town very furious.

He then requested his younger brother to open their mothers' room for him to take some of her clothing or else he would kill him. The Prosecution said when the young brother ignored the order, Aboagye pounced on him beat him and hit his head several times against a walls until the boy fell down unconscious.

When the mother went to the boys' rescue, the convict turned his anger on her by hitting her several times with torchlight. The Prosecution said the mother later led her battered son to report the case at the Akim Ofoase Police Station where they were issued with medical forms to go for treatment at the Akim Brenase Clinic and the convict was later arrested.
