President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed Ghana's long-standing relationship with Zimbabwe, describing it as a bond formed through shared struggles for African liberation.

Speaking at a state banquet in Mnangagwa the visiting Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, he said the relationship between Ghana and Zimbabwe predates formal diplomacy.

He reaffirmed Ghana’s longstanding relationship with Zimbabwe that has been forged through shared struggles for African liberation and strengthened by enduring personal connections.

“Ghana and Zimbabwe are bound by a story that predates former diplomacy, a story that is forged in the defining struggles for African liberation, led by visionaries such as Kwame Nkrumah and the late President Robert Mugabe.

“Their shared ideals of freedom, dignity, and African unity continue to guide our path today. But beyond these historic bonds lies a deeply personal connection," he remarked.

President Mahamma also recalled how President Robert Mugabe once lived and worked in Ghana as a teacher.

“President Mugabe lived and worked in Ghana as a teacher and intellectual, embracing the ideals of a newly independent Africa.

“His marriage to Madame Sally Francisco Mugabe, a proud daughter of Ghana, further cemented the ties between our two people. Zimbabwe's independence marked a major milestone in the African liberation struggle," he noted.

He noted that the two countries will continue to deepen cooperation across various sectors, including education and leadership development.

“The service of our Vice President as a Chancellor of the Women's University in Africa stands as another testament to the growing depth of cooperation between our two countries.

“It is these human connections, quiet but enduring and meaningful, that give true substance to our bilateral relations. There's something profoundly reassuring about the friendship between Ghana and Zimbabwe,“ Mahama added.

The President of Zimbabwe, Emerson Mnangagwa, is in Ghana for a three-day state visit.

During the visit, President Mnangagwa is also scheduled to tour the Sweden Ghana Medical Centre (SGMC) and the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant to learn about Ghana’s healthcare delivery and waste management innovations.

He will also pay tribute to Ghana’s founding father by laying a wreath at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park.
