Accra, March 8, GNA - Government has released a total of 50 billion cedis from the HIPC fund for the construction of a six-storey multi-complex hall for the Ghana School of Law (GSL), Mr Kwaku Ansa-Asare said in Accra in Tuesday.
Speaking at the opening session of activities marking the 46th Law Week celebration of the school, Mr Kwaku Ansa-Asare, director of the school said work on the project would begin this year.
When completed, lecture halls of the School would be expanded for effective teaching and learning.
The weeklong celebration has as its theme: "Thirteen years of Constitutional Rule, Challenges for the Rule of Law."
Mr Ansa-Asare announced that 70,000 dollars had been released for the purchase of a bus for the school in June-July to help ease the transportation problem facing the school.
He said due to a substantial financial patronage by government since 2002, there would be no increase in school fees this academic year, and expressed the hope that government would continue to give the School the necessary support to discharge its statutory obligation of training more lawyers.
Speaking on the theme for the celebration, Professor Justice Modibo Tawiah Ocran, Supreme Court Judge, who deputised for the Chief Justice, pointed out that, since rule of law went beyond legalism, there was the need for citizens to stand against political lawlessness that believed in coups.
Justice Ocran stated that to ensure some degree of decency in the lives of the ordinary Ghanaian, there was the need for social justice to prevail.
