The museums and monuments board is reeling under great difficulties resulting from marginalization by government. Condition of service for workers of the board is one of the worst in the country.
The workers, unable to contain the situation any longer have downed their tools in demand for an improvement to their service conditions. The nationwide strike started last week as affected tourist reception especially at the Cape Coast and Elmina castles.
The acting director of the museums and monuments board, Dr. Isaac Debrah told Joy NEWS that government’s marginalizing of the sector, which symbolizes the cultural strength and history of the country is unfortunate. Dr. Debrah says the museums play a critical role in the country’s tourism drive and cannot be neglected.
Meanwhile workers of the board are still on their sit down strike to back their demands for payment of overtime and other allowances. They have also threatened to shut down other public tourist attraction sites in the country if their demands are not met.
An emergency board meeting is scheduled to take place tomorrow to attempt a resolution of the impasse.
