Muslim Community honours President Kufuor

Accra, Sept. 20, GNA - The Muslim Community on Tuesday honoured President John Agyekum Kufuor in appreciation of his Government's pro-poor economic policies as well as the respect and recognition given to the Islamic religion. He was presented with a framed Certificate at the national celebration of the "Eidul Fitri" at the Independence Square in Accra. Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharabutu, the National Chief Imam, in a Citation, said the School Feeding Programme, Capitation Grant and the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) were making a big difference in the lives of the poor and needy, who otherwise could not have afforded quality health care and education. Added to these, were President Kufuor's choice of a Muslim, Alhaji Aliu Mahama as Vice President for his eight years in Office and personal intervention to get stranded pilgrims airlifted to perform Hajj. The Citation said the Sate Honour, "Order of Volta" conferred on the Chief Imam was also a source of pride to the Muslim Community. Sheikh Sharabutu, earlier lauded the Government for the stability and economic gains achieved within the last eight years, saying "for this you deserve our commendation." He called on the leadership of the various political parties and civil society to join hands to re-assure the nation of peace during and after the upcoming general elections. He expressed concern about the recent violence in Bawku, Gushiegu and Tamale and asked the nation to unite against violence. The Chief Imam said the nation stood to lose a lot, if it did not act to stop violence. President Kufuor said he was grateful for the honour adding that, he would forever cherish and treasure it. Vice President Mahama was also presented with a Certificate for his selfless service to the nation.
