"My first day at school" in Takoradi schools

Takoradi, Sept. 11, GNA- Several pupils within the Shama Ahanta East Metropolis could not attend school when it re-opened on Tuesday. A visit by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) to some schools in the metropolis showed that though the new educational reforms were expected to start today, the confusion over the re-opening date for schools affected children's attendance.

A visit to some few schools by the GNA however recorded increases in admissions.

These include the SDA Basic School in Takoradi, Bishop Esuah catholic Schools and the Axim road cluster of schools also in Takoradi. There were a lot of activities as head teachers, teachers and other supporting staff, were seen busily registering new pupils who had formed queues.

The day has also been set aside as "My first day at school", where new pupils attending school for the first time are presented with paper caps, drinking cups and confectionaries to entice the pupils to stay in school.

Mr. Edward Owusu Asamoah, head teacher of the SDA School said 148 new pupils were being registered to continue their studies. He said some of the pupils had been transferred and were seeking admission. There were no new admissions in the Kindergarten of the SDA school.

Mr. Asamoah appealed to the management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Ministry of Education to make available to them the new syllabus and other supporting documents on the new reforms to enable them adequately adjust. The head teachers appealed to the Regional Directorate of Education to assist them with more training to make them adequately prepared for the task ahead.

Mr. Anthony E. Amoah, Western Regional Minister and Mrs Rebecca E. Dadzie, Regional Director of Education also visited the schools and distributed items to pupils in the Wassa West and Nzema east Districts of the Region.

Mr. Ayub Morgan, the Shama Ahanta East Metropolitan Director of Education and his circuit supervisors also visited schools throughout the metropolis.
