The flagbearer of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Kofi Agbenu Akpaloo, has outlined what he believes to be a unique policy aimed at providing financial benefits to children in Ghana if he is elected as president in the upcoming general election.

The initiative, known as the Child Benefit policy, seeks to stimulate the economy by providing every Ghanaian child with a monthly stipend of GH¢500.

Sharing his vision on GhanaWeb TV’s Election Desk with Mawuli Ahorlumegah, Akpaloo mentioned that the goal of the policy is to provide the necessary financial cushion, thereby allowing the government to generate revenue through demand activities which often attract VAT utilised for national development.

“The idea is that when you pump money into the system, you are stimulating the economy to generate demand activities. Assuming you have four kids who are given GH¢500 per child every month, that makes it GH¢2,000. So, when this money is spent on consumer activities, we will create an organised system where the money will be generated back through VAT,” he added.

He continued, “The money will then circulate in the economy, which will revolve about 27 times, thereby attracting VAT required to develop the country.”

When asked about the filing fee for presidential candidates in Ghana, Akpaloo suggested that the current fee of GH¢100,000 is too low and called on the Electoral Commission to increase it to GH¢2 million.

"A fee of GH¢100,000 is insignificant. Candidates who requested a decrease were not prepared. If you are not willing to raise GH¢100,000, then you are not ready to be president. Campaigning across the 16 regions of Ghana is costly. To run for president and have your name on the ballot for only GH¢100,000 is too cheap. It should be increased to GH¢2 million," Akpaloo emphasised.
