Yakubu Mbawini proved he is a father who cannot condone wrongdoing when he reported his son to the police for selling and smoking Indian hemp (wee), after all his advice for him to stop proved fruitless.
The father, who was in an Accra Circuit Court when his son was arraigned for trading in narcotic drugs, told the trial Judge, Francis Obiri that he reported his son Hamidu Yakubu “because he had been dealing in narcotic drugs for some time now.”
Mr Mbawini, a private security officer told the court that he complained about his son’s behaviour to religious leaders who advised his son but he continued to trade in the business and on some occasions threatened to kill him.
Hamidu was arrested with seven wrappers of wee in his bedroom.
The accused person pleaded guilty to the offence of trading in narcotic drugs and said he had the substance for personal use; he used some to grow his hair.
The accused person was consequently sentenced to nine months imprisonment after the judge warned him to be of good behaviour when he got out of jail or would be severely punished if he found himself a brush with the law the second time.
The facts of the case as presented by the prosecuting officer DSP Patrick Morkeh were that the complainant worked as a private security officer at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, while the accused person is his son, adding that they lived together at Omanjor.
He said in June 2011, the accused person started selling dried leaves suspected to be wee in his father’s compound so the complainant, on several occasions, warned him to stop as it was an offence to do so.
According to him, Hamidu used threatening words on his father whenever he complained about his behaviour. After several attempts to get him to stop trading in wee failed, he reported him to the police on October 12, 2012.
Furthermore, he said the police went to arrest the accused person but did not meet him at home.
The police officer said two days later Hamidu was arrested after seven wrappers of wee were found in his room.
He said the accused person was arraigned after police concluded investigations.
