The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), on Wednesday embarked on a major demolition exercise at Dagomba-Line, a slum area in the Asokore-Mampong Municipality, pulling down a number of illegal structures sited along the drainage system.
The exercise, which was initially met with some pockets of resistance from traders affected by the exercise, saw excavators demolishing containers and kiosks, as well as wooden structures.
Mr. Kwabena Nsenkyire, Ashanti Regional Coordinator of the NADMO, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Akwatia-line near Kumasi, that the exercise was to ensure the free-flow of water in the drains.
The area, inhabited mainly by migrants, was one of the worst hit in the recent flooding in the Region, which claimed about seven lives, and also destroyed massive property in its wake.
The Regional NADMO Coordinator cited Anhwiam, Anloga-Junction and Aboabo Number One, as the other areas where similar structures had been pulled down.
Meanwhile, some traders affected by the on-going demolition exercise at Anloga-Junction, had appealed to the NADMO to give the exercise a human face and accused the Organisation of not providing them with prior notice, arguing that they had been greatly affected by the development.
Madam Awuni Kumah, who sells stationery, and a mother of four, said she had been trading at the place for over two decades, and found it perplexing the way their containers were pulled down forcefully.
She appealed to the government to as a matter of urgency re-settle them to enhance their livelihood.
